Hug and Hamper started with a conversation at home — the kind you don't plan, and don't expect to turn into a business.
It began with our dog Yoda — a Cobberdog who's very much part of the family. One evening, my 11-year-old daughter and I got talking about how much he deserved something special — not just another bag of treats off the supermarket shelf, but a proper gift, put together with care. So I asked her: why don't you build it yourself? Pick the things you know he'd love, put them in a box, and give it a name of your own.
She did. That box became her brand — a hamper made for pets, it called Yo and Van, Yes, it is Yoda and Vanda, built entirely around the idea that the animals we love deserve to be spoiled properly. Watching an 11-year-old take an idea that seriously, from first sketch to finished brand, is what convinced me there was something bigger here.
I've spent over 20 years in the corporate world, and if there's one thing I've learned, it's that good relationships run on genuine gestures — and most people are terrible at finding the time to make them. I have friends and clients who make wonderful things, who care deeply about the people they work with, but who've never had an easy way to put that care into someone's hands. A generic gift basket doesn't say much. Something made properly, sourced properly, and sent with real thought — that says everything.
That's why Hug and Hamper exists. Partly because my daughter proved that a good idea, done with heart, can become something real. And partly because I wanted to build the thing I kept wishing existed in my own industry — a way for the people and businesses I know to present what they've made, and what they care about, to the people who matter to them, delivered properly, without the guesswork.
We're Melbourne-based, and Melbourne runs through everything we make. We source as much as we can from local makers and Australian producers — some of them friends, some of them people we've met purely because we went looking for the best. Every hamper we send, whether it's for someone you love, a client you value, or the dog who never leaves your side, is built the same way: thoughtfully, locally, and with the person receiving it front of mind.
